Day 1
(article taken from CSA website)
South Africa’s Para-cyclists raked in
a total of six gold medals on the first day of the 4th edition of the
International Cycling Union (UCI) African Para-cycling championship
Time Trial race on Saturday 10th December 2011 in Accra, Ghana.
The Time Trial competitors raced on a 3.2km stretch on the ‘Kanda
Highway’ forming a 6.4km lap.
For some of the team, it was the first time that they were
participating outside of South Africa. Young Madre Carinus
however, is considered a “veteran” at these events.
Madre, who hails from Stellenbosch, has represented her country on
several occasions and provided stability to the newcomers to the team.
Mr Maxwell Vardon, Executive Secretary of the National Council on
Persons with Disability, who opened the ceremony, expressed regret at
the treatment which many disabled persons experienced across Africa,
forcing them to resort to begging and other anti-social vices to earn a
living.
Madre and fellow tri-cyclists Keenan Bickle (Kimberley) and Yusthin
Lintnaar (Paarl) as the only riders in their categories (T1 men, T2
men, T1 Women), created awareness to the communities of Ghana who are
hard at work to develop the sport of Para-cycling. In the
process, they scored valuable UCI-points.
Madre completed her one lap in 14 minutes 30 seconds. Yustin
raced his two laps in 24 minutes 09 seconds (T2 men), while Keenan
suffered an unfortunate mechanical and could not finish his T1 race.
Andries Scheepers put on an impressive performance, racing in the H4
category. The Rustenburg local competes in the same category as
current World Champion Ernst van Dyk, and completed his three laps in
31 minutes 37 seconds.
C4 participant Thabo Sesing (Kimberley) proved that he is a force to be
reckoned with, and a talent worth nurturing as we progress towards the
2016 Paralympics. Thabo completed his three laps in 32 minutes 44
seconds.
The tandem team of Lourens de Kock (pilot) and Francois Bezuidenhout
raced in amongst five other teams in the B2 category. Their SA
teammates and supporters held their breath in anticipation as they had
broken several spokes during their 4 laps of the 6.4km circuit, yet
their outstanding performance still earned them a gold medal despite
their tribulations during their race. Lourens and Francois
clocked 41 minutes 44 seconds.
Team captain James van Rensburg was superb in guiding his team and
keeping them positive – James participated in the C5 class
amongst three participants, finishing his three laps in 29 minutes 21
seconds.
Ghana gained the exclusive rights from the UCI to host this year's
African Championship event, which will automatically qualify Team Ghana
and other African countries by accruing maximum points for the various
athletes to the 2012 London Paralympic Games.

Sept 2011 |
WE HAVE A WORLD CHAMPION - AGAIN!!
Punching above their weight, as usual, our team
did us proud -
producing a World Champion in the process. Ernst v Dijk beat the best in
the world in the H4 road race, claiming GOLD in what must have been a
fantastic
final sprint to watch. According to the National Team coach, Madre Carinus rode the championship
of her life, finishing just seconds short of a bronze medal in the road
race. Stuart McCreadie and Riaan Nel
rode extremely well and their finishing times, relative to the bunch
that produced the medallists, show just how competitive they were.
Thank you JC and your support team for a exceptionlly well
orgaised tour. The official results are on the UCI website.
The team included Ernst
van Dyk, Stuart McCreadie, Goldy Fuchs, Riaan Nel,
Gerhard Viljoen, Madre Carinus, Jaco Nel and the tandem pair Kamelen
Kleinsmith and Michelle van
Rensburg. With support provided by JC van der Walt (Manager),
Ricky Kulsen (Coach), Elmari Smit
(Physio) and Pieter Jansen (Mechanic). |

CSA National Track Championships. April 2011

This year's Paracycling National Track Championship was a landmark
occasion. For the first time, the championships was an event that was
fully integrated with Cycling South Africa's able-body track National
Track Championships. Paracyclists who participated in
the
championships were widely representative of a number of regions: 4
riders represented Gauteng, 2 Nothern Cape, 1 Free State
and 6 Western Province. A new standard, based on 85% of the
current World Record times, was established for the championships
(necessary because of the new UCI classes that have come into effect
since the 2010 national championships). Four SA records were
established during the championships: two records for Jaco Nel (C2, TT
and Pursuit); Roxy Burns (C4, TT); and, Dane Wilson
(C5, TT). Well done to all of the riders who did SA
Paracycling proud through their individual and collective efforts. A
big thank you to CSA's track commission, and the event
organisers, who went out of their way to make their paracycling
colleagues feel extremely welcome at the championships.

Nedbank
National Championships for people with physical disabilities,
Rustenburg. March 2011
WPcyclingPD
did it again!
Following on from 2010, the Western Cape is the 2011 Nedbank National Championships winning region for paracycling
(junior and senior). This achievement is attributable to everyone
who contributed in so many different ways - especially the athletes,
but also the management and support team.
Congratulations to Kamelen Kleinsmith
who was judged the most promising senior athlete at the national
championships, taking all sporting codes into account. In the
junior category, this accolade went to Freestate's newcomer Hannes Visser, also a
para-cyclist. Riaan Nel received
the Nedbank Star Award for his sporting achievements over the
years. Also, well deserved was the award given to Deon Mans for the most supportive
parent and team manager. Rounding off a great performance at
the championships, was the "Gees Award" earned by the WP team.

Toer de Kaap - 13 to
18 Feb
The TDK from George to
George via 515 km of grueling hills and dales over 6 days is over. Only
4 of the 8 cyclists who started, completed the whole distance.
Eugene Steyn and Thomas Micklem held the WP flag high and we are
soooo proud of them. WELL DONE GUYS!!!. Thomas unfortunatly
had to withdrew after day 3 due to huge blisters and pressure sores.
Hope you recover soon Thomas. Eugene had a great tour and
despite all the hardship had a stirling performance at the OCC the
next day!!. This
is indeed the toughest tour and conditions were horrid, with
some days with unbearable heat and others in thick mist. Watch
this space for a indepth report.

BOLAND DRUKPERS
FUNRIDE
SUNDAY
- 23
January |
Andrew Stodel, Stuart McCreadie
and Thomas Micklem rode the 84km Boland Drukpers Funride. It was a nice
route spoilt only a little by the strong wind from the front on the way
back to Paarl from Malmesbury.
Stuart finished
in a time of 03:01:52 at an average speed of 27.71km/h.
Andrew finished in a time of 03:37:36 at an average speed of 23.16km/h
and I finished in a time of 04:38:03 at an average speed of 18.13km/h.
We started in the
group with the tandems, just behind the junior league
riders. I see from the results that Stuart beat all the tandems home,
finishing 5 minutes before the first tandem.!!!

THE
BURGER - 29 November 2009
The three hand
cyclists, namely Thomas Micklem,
Stuart McCreadie
and Andrew
Stodel started
at 05:50 on Sunday morning together with the tandems from Nelsons Creek
Wine Estate near Wellington on the 97km journey of Die Burger Cycle
Tour. It was a lovely day for cycling being overcast and reasonably
cool and also with almost windless conditions.
The route took us from
Nelsons Creek into Wellington via the Lady Loch bridge, then on the
undulating road to Hermon. From Hermon the route went to Malmesbury and
at the 30km mark the only real climb of the day
started, the
Botmaskloof pass between Riebeek Kasteel and Malmesbury. The climb went
on for 10km and climbed a total of 266m.
After the climb there
was a long downhill into Malmesbury and then the undulating route back
to Nelsons Creek.
Stuart McCreadie
finished the 97km in a time of 3:58:10 and remarkably even beat at
least 6 tandems home.
Andrew Stodel finished
in a time of 4:33:38 and Thomas Micklem finished in a time of 6:37:51.
